Willie Nelson is now 90 years-old and still touring. He’s had the most remarkable life.
For nearly 70 years in show business, Willie has written great songs and sung them well. He has entertained millions of people and has sold equally as many records. In addition, he’s been an activist and an outspoken figure for Farm Aid and numerous other charities.
You would think with his tour schedule, which could have hundreds of dates in any given year, you would think he would have been an absentee father or had some conflicts with his kids. But no, not many. Willie has been happily married for 32 years and had 8 children. Sadly, one passed away by suicide . All his surviving children are grown adults with four of them following in their dad’s very, very, large footsteps in the music business.
Willie is not only NOT a distant parent, but he often plays with two of his sons on stage. Two of his sons, Micah and Lukas, have their own bands and fan following, too.
The other day, I had a chance to hear Lukas Nelson sing, and I literally had to check if it wasn’t some sort of prank or lip synch. Lukas sounds SO much like his dad it isn’t just eerie , but it’s amazing and beautiful to hear. It’s almost as though when the senior Nelson leaves us, Lukas could sing as if he were another Willie Nelson. Lukas Nelson has played on stage frequently with his dad and helped celebrate his dad’s 90th birthday at the Hollywood Bowl this past April.
When you watch and listen to Lukas sing this song, “Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground,” you are stunned to know that Willie wrote that song nearly 50 years ago, and that Lukas has now resurrected it in, virtually, Willie’s voice.
I can’t say I’m a knowledgeable Willie Nelson fan, but listening to his son completely blew me away… You MUST hear this to believe it. It’s NOT Willie and not some impersonator, but it’s all Lukas.
And for a generation to come, Lukas Nelson will keep the memories and the voice of Willie Nelson very much alive.
