A fun story about Harry Caray.
Caray, the legendary baseball announcer was broadcasting an NBA exhibition game once in Memphis. (Harry did broadcast basketball for the St. Louis Hawks).
Harry was taking a nap when the phone rang.
“Hello?”, said Harry.
‘Hello Harry, this is Elvis Presley, and Im a big fan of the Hawks”.
Before he could finish the sentence…Harry hung up on the caller.
Some idiot is pranking me, he thought.
The phone rings again.
‘Harry, its really me….Elvis Presley”.
Harry says..”Listen pal, if you’re really Elvis Presely why not come to the hotel and prove it”.
Elvis said for him to look out of the window in 20 minutes and see if a huge limo with him in it didn’t pull up.
Twenty minutes or so go by.
A massive white limo pulls up..and Harry’s eyes popped out of his head.
He raced downstairs and ran to the limo.
Window rolls down….it WAS Elvis.
Harry gets in.
Elvis tells him he’s been a fan of basketball and a fan of the Cardinals and was also a big Harry fan.
Harry tells Elvis:
‘Elvis..why not come to the basketball game tonight and sit with me on the broadcast?”
Elvis says:
‘Harry, if I go to the game…there won’t BE a game’.
But then Elvis says this.
“But,I’ll have a limo pick you up 10 minutes after the game and take you to Graceland.”
Sure enough the game ends and its near midnight and the car is there waiting.
Harry gets in the car and it drives him to Graceland where Elvis is waiting with his Memphis “mafia”.
Elvis looks at Harry and says…”Have you eaten”?
Harry says no.
Elvis then had his staff order a boatload of fried chicken, BBQ,mashed potatoes and pies and cakes from the most famous BBQ in Memphis.
For the next 6 hours until dawn…Harry told Elvis Stan Musial stories and baseball stories and Elvis loved every minute of it.
A few years go by and Harry is in Las Vegas and Elvis is headlining.
Harry gets word to Elvis that he’s there..and Elvis sends a note to Harry before the show to come back stage..after his performance…
For the rest of the night and again until the wee hours of the morning, Harry and Elvis hung out together and bonded.
Harry Caray and Elvis Presley became instant friends and remained close until Elvis died.
Holy Cow!!!
