Most wealthy people donate money to charity.
That’s not news.
But Mackenzie Scott has made giving her money away to the needy her life’s work.
Since her divorce from Jeff Bezos in 2019, Scott has has donated more than $19.25 billion to over 2,450 non-profit organizations.
Her approach has been to provide large, unrestricted gifts to organizations with a focus on areas like communities facing high poverty, racial inequity, and lack of access to philanthropic capital.
Her giving includes significant contributions to groups like Habitat for Humanity and Planned Parenthood.
She has also donated hundreds of millions to historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), and various other groups working in areas of need.
Scott does not do many interviews and is known for her deliberate avoidance of the media spotlight.
She does not give public interviews and has historically stayed out of the public eye, even opting not to have a website for a period of time.
Her philanthropic approach involves direct outreach to organizations rather than receiving applications, which further reduces the need for public engagement.
Scott got 38 BILLION in her divorce settlement with Bezos six years ago.
Mackenzie has said she will give away most her money to charity until her “safe is empty”.
There are many charitable billionaires, but none at the level of Ms. Scott.
Her life reminds me of the quote often attributed to Arthur Ashe,
“What we earn makes us a living…but what we give, make us a life”
