It should come as no surprise to anyone reading this blog that I am no fan of Donald Trump.
It may surprise you to hear me say, “Give him a chance.”
Maybe, just maybe, he is on to something. Government budgets are out of control.
Maybe Elon Musk and Vivik Ramaswami can curtail some of Washington’s wasteful spending.
The U.S. government for the first time has spent more than $1
trillion this year on interest payments for its $35.3
trillion national debt, Musk says he will cut more than $2
trillion out of the deficit by July of 2026. If he cuts 30 percent, it’s a start in the right direction. When
George W. Bush took over the Presidency from Bill Clinton,
in 2001, the US had a surplus of funds. Only twenty-three years later, we
are in such a depressed state it will be difficult for us to recover.
Maybe Trump’s on the right track — provided he leaves Musk and Ramaswami to do what their track records suggest they might do.
Maybe Trump will reign in the border. A stricter flow of
illegal immigrants into this country will certainly help.
Last week a co-worker and I had lunch at Langer’s
Deli, an 80-year-old restaurant institution in the
MacArthur’s Park section of Los Angeles. Now, as Jimmy
Webb wrote and Donna Summer sang, “MacArthur Park is
melting in the dark.”
That once beautiful park, with a magnificent lake
surrounded by bountiful large palm trees, was now more depressed
than any third-world country.
Homelessness was everywhere. People were openly
doing drugs or passed out on every corner. Merchants
shamelessly peddled their wares from makeshift booths.
People were begging for money, food, or both. My co-
worker and I agreed that as much of a treat the food was, we
would not be returning. The choice may not be ours. The
Langer’s Family has just about had enough. If
nothing is done to rectify the situation soon, they will close the doors on their famed eatery.
All of the homeless of course were not illegal immigrants. Many were citizens of this country. All needed treatment for PTSD, mental illnesses, or alcohol and drugs.
The real tragedy is so many homeless are our Vets. These problems are everywhere, not just in Los Angeles.
Maybe the Republicans can offer a better solution because the status quo is unacceptable,
The average lifespan of an American is 74 years old. In Japan, it’s 84.Our food is saturated with dyes and chemicals. If RFK is a nut, maybe it takes a nut to wake the public up to our health crisis.
Look I am as concerned as anyone about the environment,
woman’s rights, the cost of a home, healthcare,
and the price of an education. Costs are
spiraling out of control. I get it. But these problems are hardly new.
Trump won’t have t
o worry about getting re-elected (If he doesn’t try to circumvent the Constitution).
Maybe he will dial down the verbosity and put his energy
into becoming a serviceable president for all the people.
We have no other choice. We must pray Donald Trump
makes less bad decisions than good.
Although he won’t admit it, like any president he will fuck up a lot. He often boasts he didn’t “start a war” his first term. Let’s hope he ends a few this time around.
I sure as hell didn’t vote for him but a majority of the electorate did. The die is cast. I sure hope they knew what they were doing.
He’s the ship’s skipper now. For better or worse we are all aboard. Let’s give it a chance.
