To me, the smartest, wisest, most thoughtful, and most articulate voice in American politics is the most “unelectable”, at least where the country is now.
He’s Pete Buttigieg, the Secretary of Transportation.
He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford. In 2007, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree with first-class honours in philosophy, politics, and economics after studying at Pembroke College, Oxford. He’s also Harvard educated.
He speaks eight different languages.
Was a Navy Reserve officer for 8 years and deployed to Afghanistan. He served with distinction in our military.
He should be a person who could be an tremendous asset to American governance, but he will likely never be elected President.
Because he is gay.
Buttigieg is the first openly gay cabinet member in US history.
Pete isnt afraid of Fox News, either.
He appears regularly on the channel and takes on all kinds of aggressive and even hostile questions…and answers them.
I want to share what Buttigieg said recently about the coarsening of American politics.
And why the MAGA Republicans, and many who support them don’t have much to debate on.
“When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a culture war.
So, you got a political faction that really doesn’t have a lot of answers for many of the questions that people are wrestling with.
They want to talk about gas prices..but they don’t have an answer on gas prices.
They don’t have an answer on inflation.
Many of them answered our call for bipartisan infrastructure work with “no.”
They have no answer on what to do about the price of prescription drugs.
They voted against lowering them.
Don’t have an answer on what to do about the cost of childcare.
Don’t have a great answer on taxes
They actually want to raise taxes for the poor.
That’s a new one.
I thought I’d seen it all.
I saw Senator Tim Scott’s proposal to raise taxes for the poor.
That’s not great territory for them to be debating on.
So what do they do?
They find somebody vulnerable and beat em up.
Which at the moment is largely the trans community.
And they find something to talk about which can go between the laughable like, “Is Donald Duck going to make your kid gay?”
To the incredibly dark, which is the suggestion that the very presence of someone who is gender non conforming or trans, or gay, or lesbian or otherwise different, the very existence of somebody like that is ONLY an adult subject.
That if MY kids, let’s say in a first grade classroom, were to mention in passing that over the weekend, they had to be had a great time going with their dads to the zoo, that they would have somehow by saying that uttered something “age inappropriate” and get us really fired up about that fight.
And it’s just their politics.
So I guess what I’m saying is we’re seeing a lot of overlapping patterns that are all pointing in the direction that to the worst tendencies in humanity. If you gain power by hurting people, those who seek power will keep doing it.”
COMMENT: This is an astute, thoughtful, insightful comment made by a man who is one of the brightest , most gifted public speakers and public servants.
And it’s most likely he’ll be rejected or feared or dismissed by millions of American voters …because he’s gay.
What a stupid, backward people American voters are.
