I’m going to take a break this morning , a break from writing about the horror of this administration, and tell you about my all time favorite political ensemble TV.
And it’s really the ONLY one.
I don’t consider SNL a strictly political show, though even if it were, it’s not that funny much to me anymore and hasn’t been for years.
Nope, the funniest, the most biting, the most inventive, and the most intelligent political satire ensemble show is “The Daily Show”, which is closing in on 30 years on the air on Comedy Central.
Jon Stewart replaced original 1996 host Craig Kilborn as host in 1998, and with the exception of a long hiatus, returned to host usually once a week on the landmark comedy show.
The show is almost always hysterically funny and gives me, every night. a break from the terrifying reality of the destructive Trump administration.
Stewart is the Babe Ruth of the “Daily Show”.
He is biting, insightful, goofy, self effacing, and always, always spot on.
Jon writes much of his material, but his writers, and there are 25 of them, provide some of the best and most witty and sometimes uproarious comedy on the the tube.He is also deeply intelligent in the tradition of his inspiration, George Carlin.
But where once Jon was the Monday thru Friday host, the show has grown to include the most numerously brilliant hosts in the shows history.
I think Ronny Chieng,a veteran Malaysian standup comedian and Emmy Award winner is so funny he makes me hurt.
His accent makes his material even funnier and you can tell he is a brutally irreverent character who looks at America with all it’s flaws and it’s politics as absurd and idiotic.
Then theres Desi Lydic, who came to the show during the Trevor Noah era.
She is a trained actor who starred on an MTV series, but she is greatly suited as a terrifically funny and witty anchor and correspondent.
She is also beautiful which sometimes belies her strength of her comedy takes.
Lydic saw herself as a comedic actor with “a journalistic responsibility” to the truth, in regard to the serious topics she approaches through a humorous lens, as a correspondent for the show.
Her inspiration was Carol Burnett. Desi is a massive star and should get her own series.
I’m a huge fan of Josh Johnson, who also is one of the show’s head writers.
Josh is a very low key type comedian who doubles as an anchor and correspondent, and is brutally zany and cutting.
Jordan Klepper is probably the most recognized Daily Show anchor outside of Jon Stewart.
He began his career as a member of The Second City and Upright Citizens Brigade. From 2014 to 2017, he was a correspondent on The Daily Show, now he’s both anchor and field interviewer of MAGA. Fantastic command of comedy and the MAGA world, which he sometimes humanizes.
I’m also a huge fan of Michael Kosta, who has roots in standup, but like Stewart, sees both the absurdity and the danger of what is happening in America.
Kosta’s explanation of Trump’s baffling tariff plan the other night was worthy of an Emmy on its own.
He is brilliant.
I could go on and on.
The Daily Show features guest commentators like Charlamagne the God, Lewis Black, and a host of other great comedians.
I had a dream the other night that political satirist legend Robert Klein was added to the show, but it was just a wishful dream.
In his day, the now 83 year old Robert Klein would’ve been a perfect host, with George Carlin.
I love “The Daily Show” which has earned, and I mean EARNED 26 Emmys for outstanding comedy series.
These days it is light years funnier than SNL which has won a record 95 Emmys.
If you are burned out, tired, or sad at what Trump and his goons are doing to America, and if you haven’t already, watch “The Daily Show” and laugh out the horror.
If anything, you won’t feel so alone.
The “Daily Show” is fearless, pointed, but most of all, funny.
Very, very, funny.
And we need the laughs now more than ever.
