I love John Oliver. I think his show, “Last Week, Tonight”is one of the most entertaining, informative, and often drop dead funny shows on TV. His show goes deep into some of the most complicated subjects .He is fearless and acerbic and pointed, and Oliver says things that almost no one who reports the news would say or reflect on.
John Oliver earns 1 million dollars per episode for his show on HBO.
But yesterday, I read a report that surprised and disappointed me.
Oliver apparently had a fit when he was told that HBO refused to pay him more than 1 million an episode, and up his annual salary beyond his current 30 million dollars a year!
And so, John Oliver fired his agents.
Let me say this again.
John Oliver earns 30 million a year, and ONE million an episode for his series which is already signed to extend three more years.
Look, I believe show business and sports salaries are often stratospheric , but the people who get these big salaries are the best at what they do and management wouldn’t pay what they simply cant afford. But in this case, it seems ridiculous. Especially because John Oliver often goes after corporate greed, and corruption on his show.
John has every right to want to make a great living, and he’s an enormously talented man with an award winning show. But having a fit, firing his agents because he cant earn more than 30 million for his TV show, that is on for a little more than half a year seems to be a bad look.
Sorry to say this, but this story makes me feel John Oliver should ridicule his own materialism and avarice. It seems he’s become the very kind of person his show mocks!
