He doesn’t know. He couldn’t know how much he means to me. He is there every day. There by my side in stressful times. There by my side in happy times. He is mostly happy all the time.
My dog, Kobe, has been my best pal since the day I rescued him.
I had been distraught like many of you after we lost Kobe Bryant…then Covid hit and isolated me (like you, too) … and I wanted to do something positive and kind in Kobe’s memory, so I went to the West Coast Lab rescue and, I thought, I’d saved this dog’s life.
I didn’t realize that it was the other way around.
He didn’t exactly save my life, but he made it less stressful, less isolated, and always, always, brought joy to me, even with an occasional burst of mild trouble…getting into garbage or chewing on my brand-new book I was reading.
He MORE than makes up for it by just being him.
A couple of years ago, I wrote a piece called, ‘What my dog taught me about life”. It is also a piece I perform live when I am a speaker and entertainer for corporations and performing arts centers. This little essay always resonates with the audience, because almost anyone can relate who loves any dog.
I also wrote a children’s book called “Kobe and a Boy named Roy”. The book really isn’t about me…but the spirit of it is. But even if you do none of those things, I wanted you to know that my Black Lab has brought so much love and joy into my life – and he does it every day, effortlessly, but loyally, kindly, and almost always silently.
